In Short:
Sudden bursts of violence interlaced with extended periods of drama building silence set the mood in this extremely unusual and extremely entertaining Oscar contender with a clear 80's throwback feel

Highlights from TIFF

The Toronto International Film Festival is coming to a close, and it sounds like Shame was the most talked about movie of the festival.  I hadn't heard much of the film prior to the festival, but now I know it stars the up-and-coming Michael Fassbender (who also starred in X-Men: First Class and the soon to be released Oscar contender A Dangergous Method) and tells the story of "30-something Brandon, his myriad sexual escapades, and what happens when his wayward younger sister moves in with him" (IMDB).

For more details on the festival, see the list that indieWire put together giving a rundown of all the films.

Name that Movie Poster

If you're a super hip young man such as myself then you are probably spending your Friday night in a similar way to myself; shirtless, eating raw cookie dough, drinking Amp Energy Drinks (despite no intention of moving farther than the distance between the toilet, the fridge, and the couch), trying to act like you don't have a boatload of MBA readings to do, waiting for your stomach to settle from the two pounds of enchiladas you just ate so you can focus on Arthur which you rented from your local Redbox due to lack of other options, and wasting time on Sporcle.

If you fit that description then (1) congratulations and (2) try to beat my scores in the Movie Poster Sporcle games:

The Muppets Teaser Trailer is Awesome

I hadn't seen any of the trailers yet for The Muppets, but this first one is an awesome parody of the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trailer, and the movie is very much now on my radar.  The movie has too many good things going on to fail:

  1. Jason Segel
  2. Muppets
  3. Amy Adams
  4. Amazing Trailers
  5. Muppets
The Muppets is coming out 23 November 2011.

In Short:
Viruses are no joke, and Contagion does a frightening job of proving that fact in this extremely realistic and (I can only assume) extremely accurate portrayal of what would happen if a worldwide pandemic were to occur

The Apocalypse Must Be Near...

A couple weeks ago Forbes released its list of the highest paid Actors, well they have now released a slightly expanded list of the highest paid men in entertainment.  Who is the highest paid you ask?  Must be Spielberg, right? Nope.  Then it must be Simon Cowell?  Wrong.  Oprah?  Not a man.  You could keep guessing and I highly doubt you would ever guess the extremely non-talented person occupying number one on the list.  I'll give you clue...his name rhymes with Myler Terry, and his movies and TV shows are mitty and ducking tawful.  Any guesses?

Is something wrong with me if I want to see this movie?

How to Prepare for Oscar Night

Last year I filled the chalkboard in my kitchen with a list of all the Oscar contenders, and this year I'm doing the same.  Cross them off as you see them, and you have an easy way to ensure you've seen all the major Oscar players whose names you can expect to hear on Oscar night.

Plus, this is about the only thing that is remotely artistic that I get to do all year so I need this to keep my skills fresh for when I need to crush my kids in finger painting contests.

And, you'll note that some of the contenders are missing (The Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris, Warrior).  I omitted those because I've already seen them and my chalkboard is only so big so don't hate.

In Short:
Amazing performances, a masterfully symbolic plot, and an enlightening glimpse into the ever growing sport of Mixed Martial Arts all contribute to this exhilarating, emotionally exhausting Drama which is one of the best films of the year

Warrior is finally here!

Warrior gets released today and early reviews are solid.  I am going to see it in approximately 55 minutes and I haven't been this jacked for a movie in a long time.  My review will follow tonight, and I pray to the MMA and movie gods that I am not disappointed.

Let the Oscar Predictions begin...

Gold Derby has its first list of predictions for Best Picture at the 2012 Academy Awards.  Of their 10 predictions only two are currently in theaters (The Help, Midnight in Paris), and only 1 of which I have seen (Midnight in Paris, which was enjoyable but I didn't see it as Best Picture worthy).  Looks like a pretty good crop of movies though and should be a good year, and almost every film on their list has at least one mega-Hollywood player in it.  Last year was the first year I had seen every movie with a nomination and it made watching the 5 hour Oscar broadcast astronomically more enjoyable, so do yourself a favor and head to the theater for every nominee.

War Horse

The editors also have a more detailed breakdown of each of the major categories here.  And some details statistics on every category here.

Team iLuminate

I have never watched America's Got Talent before, but I caught about 5 minutes of it tonight and saw the performance by Team iLuminate and it was frickin' awesome.  The clip below doesn't even do them justice, but watch all the YouTube videos you can, cause my guess is they will be winning this show and headlining in Vegas.

What Fascinated Me Today: 06 September 2011

Eddie Murphy Eddie Murphy, more famous but way less funny older brother of Charlie Murphy, will host the 2012 Oscars.  Not sure how I feel about this, but it can't be worse than Franco-Hathaway (People).

Lesnar vs Overeem - Not media related at all, but Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem have been booked to fight in a UFC Super Fight on 30 December 2011.  This is a dream matchup and if you were looking for a reason to start watching MMA, this is your reason (ESPN).

A Dangerous Method Who wouldn't love a drama about Sigmund Freud?  This movie looks amazing and expect to hear its name called on Oscar night (IMDB).

Top 5 Films You Missed This Summer – Just had to give this list some attention cause it is about the only other article I've seen all summer that actually had some praise for The Change Up.  I'm sure I still can't convince you it was good, but just wanted you to know I'm not the only moron out there (Criticize This).

Worst Movies of the Summer – Contradicting the past article, this is Peter Travers list of the worst films of the summer, where he does a great job bashing The Change Up (Rolling Stone).

50 Most Anticipated Movies of the Fall

Vulture put together a list of the 50 most promising movies coming out in the next couple of months, and it's a fair guess that most of the Oscar big hitters are on this list.  Real Steel being in the top 5 is pretty weak because that movie looks awful to me, but take a look at the list and start knocking these off as they come out.  Number one is Drive and there has been a lot of buzz about this film.  I haven't watched the trailer yet because the article says the trailer is a bit of a spoiler, so I recommend you follow the same path.
