OLD SCHOOL REVIEWS: 31 May 2011

Quick rundown of all the movies I watched recently:
Lucky (2010)
Very Young Girls (2007)
The Bone Collector (1999)
The Tillman Story (2010)
Life As We Know It (2010)
In case you can’t tell I was on a bit of a documentary bender recently...

Full reviews after the jump...

Movie:
Lucky (2010)
In Short:
“Lucky” is the story of a couple of lottery winners and the effect it had on their lives.  As you might have expected, money doesn’t always lead to happiness, and the not-so-happy stories covered in this film make you wonder if you should keep dropping that weekly $5 on the PowerBall.  That being said, the movie kind of drags but an interesting topic nonetheless.
Bagpipe-o-Meter:
6/10

Movie:
Very Young Girls (2007)
In Short:
A disturbing title and an equally disturbing movie.  The film follows a number of prostitutes in New York as they try to straighten out their lives.  During the film you learn the average age women become prostitutes in 13!!!!!  Shocking and sad and depressing and no apparent end in sight, the topic covered in the film makes for an interesting film.  Not a well put together film, but, as with most documentaries, the interesting topic manages to hold your interest.
Bagpipe-o-Meter:
5/10

Movie:
The Bone Collector (1999)
In Short:
A ridiculous story line with an anticlimactic ending and a horribly awkward sexual tension between a paralyzed Denzel and Angelina make for a slightly below average nineties thriller.  Pass on this one and watch Training Day or Unstoppable instead.
Bagpipe-o-Meter:
3.5/10

Movie:
The Tillman Story (2010)
In Short:
I knew of Pat Tillman and his tragic death, but this film shocked me with all the details surrounding the story.  Tragedies happen in War, but its throwing salt on the wounds when the government lies about the events and uses them to push its own agenda.  An awesome documentary filled with shocking stories and larger than life characters.
Bagpipe-o-Meter:
8.5/10

Movie:
Life As We Know It (2010)
In Short:
I can’t stand Katherine Heigl (mostly because after Knocked Up made her a superstar she made a bunch of dumb ass public comments about how sexist the movie was), but this is a pretty tolerable romantic comedy.  Two friends are left a baby when their friends are lost to a car accident.  They start out as enemies, but you’ll never guess what happens by the end (horrible sarcasm)!!!  Watch it with your girlfriend and act like you like it.
Bagpipe-o-Meter:
4.5/10
